Sustainable Design: The Values That Shaped Hayden Hill

Hayden Hill’s story didn’t begin with a product. It began with a question.

Karol and Adam, the Hayden Hill founders, noticed something surprising: while people were investing in beautiful, high-quality clothing - designer gowns, heirloom pieces, fine wool coats - there were few options for storing them with the same care. Most ended up in plastic garment bags. It raised a simple but powerful question: why should something so precious be stored in something so disposable?

The answer led them to create something better. Something worthy of the garments it would protect.

Adam and Karol tell us their story……..

Legacy Design, Defined

From the beginning, our approach has been rooted in sustainable design - creating timeless products that serve a real purpose, are made to last, and are produced with integrity. That means saying no to trends, fast fashion, and anything that doesn’t meet a meaningful need.

Every Hayden Hill piece is made intentionally. As part of our commitment to slow fashion, we design with care and release thoughtfully - never chasing newness for the sake of it. Instead, we craft with longevity in mind in both function and aesthetics. Our goal is to offer garment care that not only performs beautifully but is worthy of passing down, just like the clothes they protect.

A Purpose-Driven Path

Our vision was heavily influenced by Alan Moore’s book “Do Build,” which teaches that building a business can be purposeful and transformational. That idea resonated deeply with us. We set out to create a brand that met a practical need while reflecting our personal values: empathy, sustainability, responsibility, and excellence.

The mission was ambitious. It took us two years to reach the level of quality we envisioned. We personally tested dozens of clothes storage bags, conducted extensive market research, and worked closely with a small factory in Tamil Nadu, India, to refine our product samples. We insisted on standards that uphold the integrity of beautifully made garments.

Thoughtful Craftsmanship

Each Hayden Hill organic cotton storage bag is made in small batches, handcrafted and using a labour-intensive process. From the precise placement of labels, to ensuring there are no loose threads, to ensuring every seam is straight and every cotton panel pristine, we hold ourselves to exacting standards.

Our factory partners in Tamil Nadu have been essential to this journey. We travelled to India ourselves, visiting the cotton fields and the production floors to ensure the process aligned with our values. We worked side by side with the team to solve challenges, develop new quality control systems, and build a foundation for future production.

People, Planet, and Purpose

Hayden Hill is passionate about more than products. We’re passionate about people. We felt that it was critical that not only the product was made of a high standard, but that the factory workers were being treated well and that they were working in an environment that we were happy with. We wanted to see this with our own eyes as well as through a Sedex audit that focuses especially on working conditions in supply chains.

During our time in Karur, we also developed a relationship with the local orphanage that has since become part of our story. We created a support programme for the children at the orphanage that we hope will both give them a brighter future and grow through the Hayden Hill Foundation - our way of giving back to the communities that make our work possible.

We also remain committed to sustainable practices. All of our products are carbon neutral from their creation to their end-of-life and certified by ClimeCo. We use GOTS-certified organic cotton and ethically sourced leather from food industry byproducts, certified by the Leather Working Group. Future collections will feature recycled materials and reduced packaging.

Building for the Long Term

For us, sustainable design means thinking long-term - prioritising quality over quantity, and making intentional choices that respect both people and planet. We think in decades, not quarters, considering everything from fabric and packaging to the hands that make each piece. Even our children have joined the journey. They’ve visited subsistence organic cotton farms, walked the factory floors, served meals at the orphanage, and seen firsthand the impact a thoughtful business can make.
